Default Wiring help

Man I must be annoying the hell outta you guys now, but I bought a 3 conductor output for a guitar recently and was just wonder, What the hell is that middle conductor for?

Thats a stereo jack, so its got a ground and a left & right channel. They're usually used in audio connections for headphones/speakers and such. No problem using them in a mono application in a guitar tho.

I've wired it up and gotten sound but it still sounds like something else needs to be grounded or something because I get a constant hiss
