esp based?

I happen to recommend used Kramers, Jackson's, Charvel, and Ibanez.
I don't know too much about ESP.

Look at Japanese Jacksons, like the PS (Performer) Series, or the DK's...
There are still some great Kramer Pacers around if you keep looking.
Charvel Model Series are great also.
Just stay away from Made in India, Made in Taiwan axes for the most part.
Korean Ibanez's are some good deals as well.

Used Jackson DK-2 or Professional Series.

Def go used, I'd suggest an Ibanez RG550 or RG560, or even an S series. Another good choice would be a used Jackson DK-2 noted above.

Peavey Tracer is underrated as well.

Definitely go used.
A new 300 dollar guitar will not be near the quality you can
get if you go used.
Scour craigslist, ebay, harmony-central.com classifieds, whatever.
And post that shit here, we can let you know if it's a good deal
or not. The guys here love looking at guitars, even if it's not for them.

Hard to find, but look for the older Yamaha RGX series axes from the 80s. Failing that, grab a Kramer Focus.
