Here is my latest original. I can't sing...the leads are too high...yada yada yada. I know all this. What do you think of the song?

My 84 reissue through my Boss GT-8 pedal board. NOTHING is miked other than vocals.

Please don't flame me...I know I can't sing worth a shizzle. I am only singing these until I find a good singer. Thanks! Whaddya ya think?

I liked it. I can hear a definite Lynch influence in the solo.
Even if I didn't like it, you wouldn't hear me bashing you,
i've never written a song.
Do you have any more songs recorded?

Oh man, you must have listened to a lot of Dokken in your time ;) I can totally hear the influence. I don't think you are that bad of a singer actually, I was expecting a disaster after reading your post.

I'm with Toneseeker as well about the solo. Good stuff too. The only thing that really seemed lacking in the song was just good mixing. I've never home recorded, though, so I don't know how hard it is to do.

Awesome solo tone too, btw

Yeah, the mix could be a little better, but I'm sure you know that, and probably didn't work that hard on that aspect anyway at this point. I do like the riff in the song, it does have an 80's Dokken'ish tone to it. I was hoping for a little more of a hook in the song though, something that goes away from the main riff a little more and was a little more melodic, but that's just what my ears were wanting, and it's just my personal preference, not a slam on your tune in any way. You actually got pretty good tone with that setup, I was surprised. And damn, you know you're a very good guitar player. Not just soloing, but your rhythm tracks are solid. A lot of guys don't grasp the importance of that aspect of playing. You'll really notice it if you record, though. How many tracks did you put down on the guitars?

Good job bro!

2 rhythm, 2 seperate leads and bass. Drums, backing vocals, keys, and that's it. I don't have monitors...(ouch!) so I am mixing using headphones only. It is like christmas because I never know what is going to come out of the recorder when the disc shoots out! Some day I'll quit buying Kramers and buy some stuff I realy need!

p.s. Thanks for all the kind words guys!...and Mike: I KNOW you aren't slamming me bro! Keep up the comments...it only helps!!

I agree with Mama on this one; you can sing, man! Whoever bashes you needs to get their throat slashed! It may just be me, but I've noticed that every vocalist hates their own voice. Whatever it is, don't be so self conscious! You can sing!

And that solo is awesome! :drool2:

PS- As for all the mixing comments, it's just a demo. It's not like it's being put out by Elektra or something like that, so perfect mixing isn't necessary. Definately build on this tune! I dig it.

The thing is, NONE of us are going to have anything put out by a major label, so we're most likely going to try to come up with the best product we can on our own. Eric is a great player, and like the others said, his vocals aren't bad at all, so you want to be able to hit the right mix to accentuate his skills. Good playing will be lost on bad mixing. Mixing isn't easy, and it takes a while to get a good one. There are a lot of us online that make music at home and do these things ourselves, and a little constructive ctiticism is only for the purpose of making the recordings even better. I'm not saying I'm an expert, just that I have some experience with the trials and tribulations of mixing and am offering my experiences as a helpful opinion.

Eric, if you're mixing through headphones, it WILL be difficult. I agree. I only have a set of Alesis monitors with my setup, not the greatest, but OK. I have an excellent set of Sony phones, and I usually mix down with the phones first so I can really hear the nuance of the music, and then turn it on the monitors to try to get good overall relative levels. My personal opinions on the mix would be to bring the rhythm guitars up a little relative to the drums, and bring the vocals down some (you already know the leads are way too loud). I'd also use a little less, or a smaller reverb on the vocals, since they really seem to be in a different "space" than the rest of the song. Everything else is pretty up front, except the vocals.

That's the reason I didn't comment on the mix. I've never recorded a song, except when a band I was in a long time ago set up a casette player on a table and we recorded the song "live". :eusa_eh:

I just HIGHLY suggest getting a pair of monitors. It will make mixing a lot better, and will make your setup look much cooler too. You can find powered monitors if you don't want to get a power amp.It is so difficult to mix through phones. What kind of phones are you using right now?

I use M-Audio BX5a monitors (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-BX5a-70-Watt-Active-Studio-Monitors?sku=603707) and they sound great. They run about $300 for a pair and are worth every penny!
